Dear MLK Patron,

As the nation prepares to observe the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, the Seguin Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee is also preparing to keep Dr. King’s dream and legacy alive.

Our scheduled four day events will be held from January 12-15, 2018, and we encourage you, your family, and friends’ participation.

Tickets for the Saturday Dinner Theater can be purchase from member of the MLK Seguin Committee

The Seguin Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee is pleased to announce, Fences will be presented and portrayed live, Saturday, January 13, 2018, at their Dinner Theatre.

  • Fences,” a play by August Wilson, will be performed at the annual MLK Dinner at the Seguin Coliseum this year. The play, first performed at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1985, won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play. It is part of a series of plays set in Pittsburgh. Set in the 1950’s, the play explores the African American experience and examines race relations.
  • Denzel Washington directed and starred in the movie in 2017. He and Viola Davis, who played his wife, were both nominated for Academy Awards. Davis won for best supporting actress.
  • Seguin has its own Denzel and Viola in Papa Douglass and Dr. Dolores Major Duffey. Papa has the role of Troy, the main character in the play, and Dolores plays his wife, Rose. Troy is a garbage man in Pittsburgh. He had been an excellent baseball player in the Negro League, and is resentful that he could not play in the major leagues because of the color barrier in place at the time. He is determined that his son, who is being recruited by a college football team, not become a victim of racial discrimination, and refuses to let him play.
  • TLU theater major Devin Taylor plays Cory, the young football player. Phillip Redix plays Troy’s older son, Lyons, from a former marriage. Troy has a brother, Gabriel, who was severely wounded in the war. Gabe is played by John Blair. Bono, Troy’s best friend who admires and emulates him, is portrayed by Tally Neal. Zariah Owens plays Raynell, Troy’s daughter from an affair. The play is directed by Pat Hoppe.
